A few years back, my sister, who is a school teacher asked her students about where maple syrup came from, not one of them knew! She told me about it and I was shocked, she also told me they had no idea where bacon came from and as you can imagine had even less of an idea of when foods were in season; and the truth was she had no idea either. I realized that most people have no idea when food is in season or where it comes from for that matter. We are going to change that…today!

What makes Seasonal Produce so darn special?

  • Seasonal produce is typically fresher and therefore tastes better and is more nutritious
  • Seasonal produce is usually cheaper, who doesn’t want to save money on food?
  • You can teach your children where food comes from, how it is made and the nutritional value of food
  • Visit farmers markets to meet your produce grower

Why should you eat seasonally?

  • According to Terrapass; a company that funds renewable energy, each household could reduce their carbon footprint by about 7%
  • A USDA study found that direct to consumer famers were less likely to apply pesticides to their crops
  • Seasonal food is more likely to be found locally which supports your local economy
  • You can find out exactly how your food was grown and possibly meet the grower to ask questions
  • Eat organic food choices that may not be available year round

How do I prepare and enjoy seasonal Produce?

Here is a list of produce in season for February. If you are in a location like Los Angeles, your farmers market will likely have all of these produce items. If you live in a cold weather climate like Chicago…or NYC then we likely need to grab these items from our local supermarket or indoor farmers market. Although some of us don’t have access to a farmers market this time of year, we can still enjoy the freshness of seasonal produce.
